Oblong #151 Leather Punch Tool Made in USA
Tapered clearance. Polished barrel, with a hardened and polished edge.
Used extensively by leather bag or strap manufacturers.
CS Osborne tools aren't what they used to be. The edge all the around the punch was very coarse ground. Like whomever ground doesn't take pride in their work. I contacted CS Osborne about this and they just said thanks for bringing it to our attention. I had to clean edge up and Re-Sharpen punch.Very well made. This is my second Osborne oblong punch, just a different size. My only complaint is - for the money, can’t C.S. Osborne hire someone who knows how to sharpen these punches? They arrive well packaged but really lacking on sharpness. I’m glad I can sharpen them because I love the tool. Fits well in my large hands and have lots of metal to them. Ergonomically very comfortable and easy to use. Please, sharpen the darn things.I will continue to buy these because they are worth it.Sturdy heavy well made punch. Looked as if they had taken a rough grinding wheel briefly to the edge of this to “sharpen” it but it was nothing even in the ballpark of sharp! Very disappointed. I Put a lot of time on a water sharpening wheel and a leather strop and finally it’s pretty sharp. I got a big wooden 2lb mallet and can punch through 4 ounce veg tan leather in about 4 blows now. Before I sharpened after 15 blows it was not even 1/2 way cut through. Not sharp enough to cut thick dry leather. While Osborne is not the most expensive tool out there they have been around a long time . They know the industry and are one of the best . I bet every Saddle Maker in the U.S that has a least one Osborne tool on his bench .Poor quality had dents in the cutting edge had to try get sharp before I use itDoes not arrive very sharp, not like a blunt force tool... Had to set punch pad on the concrete floor to get enough pressure to punch through sure to punch through 8mm of leather.I use it for making holes for straps in leather and rubber soles. Got dull pretty quickly (maybe I shouldn't use it for rubber. I'm not sure. Mine broke. I was attempting to cut a hole in leather sole. I did this on a wooden surface, and perhaps I hit it too hard so it went through the leather and lodged in the wood just a few millimeters. I wiggled it to get it out and the steel broke with the piece remaining lodge in the wood. I was able to pry it out, and solder it back on.
